| SCRANTON, PA - Lackawanna County Commissioners and the Lackawanna County Council on the Arts were joined by local artists and business owners today, Thursday, January 5, 2006, at a lively awards ceremony held at the Stadium Club Restaurant, Moosic, to honor the recipients of the 2006 Lackawanna County Arts and Cultural Grant.
The grant was conceived for artists, arts organizations, and non-profit organizations conducting arts activities in Lackawanna County.
“It was extremely important to demonstrate a commitment to our cultural and educational institutions as well as the artistic community that brings life to these institutions,” said Commissioner Robert C. Cordaro.
The successful grant applicants were chosen by a well credentialed panel of reviewers. After much deliberation and critical discussion, the panel individually scored each application as to how well the applicant met the grant criteria.
The panel initially reviewed 43 grant submissions with the total requests reaching a sum of $121,000. Of that total, 24 requests were granted to equal $59,918 (department allocation was $60,000); 9 applicants were not funded and 10 were classified as ineligible.
“Today, we awarded over $59,000 in Arts and Cultural Grants for 2006, an increase of about $10,000 over 2005. Together with members of the County Arts Council, we will seek ways in the upcoming year to increase our commitment to our “creative class” and the enthusiasm and vitality they bring to the County of Lackawanna,” stated Regina Peters, Executive Director of the Department on Education and Culture.
“The projects were not only artistically excellent, but also collaborative with the community,” continued Peters.
“It is rewarding to know that our Commissioners support artists and the arts and cultural organizations in our community as indicated by their financial commitments to creative programs and projects,” said Dr. Catherine Richmond Cullen, Chair of the Lackawanna County Council on the Arts.
“Our community will thrive as the arts continue to be funded by the government,” added Cullen.
The grant projects will begin as early as January 5 and will continue through December 31st, 2006. View The Recipient List | |
