SCRANTON, PA - Lackawanna County Commissioners A.J. Munchak and Robert C. Cordaro have named Robert Francis Tuffy as the new Director of the Office of Veterans’ Affairs. Mr. Tuffy brings years of military service and achievement to his new position.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, where he received the National Defense and good conduct medals and retired from the Army Reserves as a staff sergeant, while assigned to the 305th signal company stationed at the Tobyhanna Army Depot. During that assignment, he earned countless letters of appreciation and received three Army commendation medals. In addition to his primary duties, Mr. Tuffy also served as the Reserve Coordinator for over 12 years. He was also an Equal Opportunity counselor for 15 years.
“Lackawanna County’s veterans have always provided and outsized devotion to veteran’s causes and issues and Bob Tuffy symbolizes that devotion,” stated Commissioner Robert C. Cordaro.
He is actively involved in many military organizations, serving as an active lifetime member of the Marine Corps League Northeast Detachment where his duties include acting Treasurer of the Home Association. He is also a lifetime member of the American Legion Victory Post 13.
“Bob’s dedication to the military, veteran’s affairs and community involvement make him a perfect candidate to lead this important office,” said Commissioner Cordaro. “A.J. and I continue to be focused on the Veteran’s Plaza and ongoing veteran issues and we want Lackawanna County to reflect that,” added Cordaro.
Throughout his career, Mr. Tuffy was the recipient of numerous awards some of which included the prestigious Defense Logistics Agency Distiniguished Career Service Award and the Commanders Award. He is active in many bourgouh community projects including Crime Watch, which earned him the Citizens Crime Volunteer Recognition Award from former Governor Tom Ridge in 1999. Mr. Tuffy is a graduate of Dunmore High School and retired from his duties at Tobyhanna Army Depot after 33 years of federal service. He currently resides in Dunmore with his wife Angeline. He is the parent of four children and the grandparent of four grandchildren.
