Marywood University, in conjunction with The Northeast Theatre, presents Antigone by Jean Anouilh. This 20th century version of the classic tale of duty vs. conscience is the first production by The Portal Project, a professional/educational collaboration between Marywood’s Theatre Program and The Northeast Theatre.
Antigone by Jean Anouilh is based on the play of the same title by the Greek playwright, Sophocles, originally written for the spring festival of Dionysis in 411 B.C. But Anouilh wrote his play for
occupied Paris in 1944, and gave the play’s central conflict about personal conviction confronting the will of the State vivid meaning for his time, and our time, and for all time. With this production,
Marywood University’s Theatre Program and The Northeast Theatre inaugurate The Portal Project, an educational/professional collaboration designed to enhance the student’s experience through peer level
creative contact with working theatre artists.
Jean Anouilh collaborated on his first play when he was only 19, and continued writing prolifically until 1976. His work spans the full spectrum from classically-based tragedy to costume epic. This
production of Antigone is directed by Mary Ethel Schmidt, a company member of The Northeast Theatre and of the TNT Conservatory faculty. She is also an actress and playwright.
The cast of Antigone includes James Langan as Creon who was a student with The Northeast Theatre Conservatory 2006, and is currently the Theatre’s technical director and resident lighting designer.
He will be joined by Marywood students Regina Hoffman as Antigone, with Erin Trinidad, Victor Silvestri, Amber Dutko, Shayla Barrett, Mark Baron, David Brace, Mike Hurst, Sean Gibbons, David Flynn, and Patti
Purcell.
Sets are designed by Judith Snyder, lighting by Robert Lozada, costumes by Andrea Lenci, and sound by James Langan; TNT company member Page Clements is the vocal coach, and Laurie Camlet is the stage
manager.
