McDade Park, reclaimed in the 1970s from coal mining terrain, is now one of the city's top leisure destinations. 

Spread across some 200 acres of rambling greenspace, the park is free to all and boasts hiking and nature trails, an arboretum, and natural gardens.

 

Other attractions include:

  • Children’s fishing pond (stocked several times a year) 
  • An Olympic-sized swimming pool with bath house
  • Basketball and Tennis courts 
  • Two (2) baseball fields 
  • Pavilion and playground 
  • Outdoor picnic areas with charcoal grills 
  • Wide open fields for frisbee in summer, cross country skiing in winter 
  • Rolling hills for sunning in summer, sledding in winter 
  • 1.8 mile cross country running course, among the best in the Northeast 
  • A newly landscaped series of cascades along the Lucky Run Creek 
  • Large 60’ X 90’ tent, home to a summer professional theatre company 
  • Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour Complex 
  • Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum 
  • Newly dedicated statue honoring the anthracite miners
