Lackawanna County Courthouse Grounds To Host Tree Lighting & Holiday On The Square

Lackawanna County’s Courthouse Square will be transformed into a festive wonderland on December 5 and 6, complete with bright lights, fabulous shopping and holiday treats for all.

Lackawanna County and ScrantonMade are partnering again to present the second annual Holiday on the Square on Friday, December 5, from 5 pm – 9 pm and Saturday, December 6, from 11 am – 6 pm on Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton.

The County will also “flip the switch” to light up its tree on Friday, December 5, at 6 pm.  The tree ceremony will start-off with carols sung by The Catholic Choral Society and complimentary hot chocolate and cookies served by the Scranton Chapter of UNICO National.

The concept for Holiday on the Square harkens back to the 16th century German tradition of Christkindl Markets or Christmas Markets when local farmers and artisans would sell their unique regional wares, local foods, crafts and decorations.  Scranton’s winter market features items from on local and regional vendors, along with live music, specials, coupon discounts and a variety of activities for people of all ages.

On Friday night, Holiday on the Square will be part of Scranton’s First Friday Art Walk.  The Steve Kurilla Jazz Band will play holiday favorites and local actors Conor McGuigan and Heather Stuart will perform a 15-minute version of the classic Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol at 5:15 pm and 7 pm.

On Saturday, December 6, Holiday on the Square will be open from 11 am – 6 pm.  ScrantonMade will again be offering special holiday gift bags to the first 100 shoppers.

A variety of children’s activities will take place between noon – 4 pm.  Local bands, singers, The Cole Family Band, The Coal Town Rounders, Anthony Hannigan and Tom Graham will provide music throughout the day.

In conjunction with the event, ScrantonMade & the Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau will be sponsoring a #ShopScranton Gift Card Contest, giving people the chance to win valuable gift cards to downtown businesses.  Shoppers can pick-up free entry tickets at the Holiday on the Square festival and at participating businesses.  The #ShopScranton contest will run through Monday, December 15.  Visit scrantonmadeholiday.com for details on the contest and the festival’s activities.

North Washington Avenue will be closed to traffic for the event, beginning on Thursday, December 4, at 5 pm and running through Saturday, December 6, at 10 pm.
