Riverside Elementary West Wins Recycling Bowl Competition Again

The mark of a true champion is its ability to come back the next season and successfully defend its title.

Riverside Elementary West is a true champion.  The school defended its 2012 Recycle Bowl title by winning the trophy again in 2013.

The school is the Pennsylvania State winner in the national competition, which is sponsored by Keep America Beautiful and The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP).  Riverside earned $1,000 in prize money for its environmental efforts.

This is Riverside’s second Recycle Bowl victory in an awards program that has been in existence for only two years.  The competition ran from October 15 through November 9 with 1,577 schools and 902,000 students participating.

Riverside students recycled 9,100 pounds of paper during the competition, which broke down to 25.2 pounds of paper per person.

A formal presentation will be made to the school, students, teachers, staff and administrators on Friday, April 19, at 10 AM in the Riverside Junior/Senior High School Auditorium.  This event is part of April’s Earth Day and Month celebration.

Riverside Elementary West has been an exemplary model of safeguarding the environment and coordinating a variety of recycling drives.  The school’s Principal Paul Brennan has offered advice on his methods of student motivation and the implementation of school recycling programs to organizations and school district administrators both in and outside of Lackawanna County.

The Lackawanna County Commissioners, program sponsors, including Keep America Beautiful and PROP, Taylor Borough officials, County environmental personnel and other dignitaries have been invited to the ceremony.

The Illusion Maker, an educational skills and entertainment act, will be on hand to provide a light, but informative presentation on recycling concepts.

For further information, contact Barbara Giovagnoli in the County’s Environmental Sustainability Office at 570-963-2017, Ext. 1.
