Griffin Pond Animal Shelter Merits “Good Works” Certificate

Staff and volunteers from the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter accept a “Good Works” certificate from the Lackawanna County Commissioners for their efforts in caring for and protecting pets. The organization receives about 6,000 animals each year and strives to promote responsible pet ownership. Services provided by the shelter include: lost and found listings, educational programs, pet adoptions, clinics and cruelty investigations.

Armed Forces Week Designated In Lackawanna County

The Lackawanna County Commissioners presented a proclamation to retired military officials, designating May 14-20 Armed Forces Week in our community. The presentation recognizes the thousands of men and women who have dedicated their lives to serving our country and protecting our principles of freedom and justice.

Gino Merli Veterans Center Nursing Staff Honored

A “Good Works” certificate was given to members of the Gino Merli Veterans Center Nursing staff by the Lackawanna County Commissioners for their commitment to care and the services they provide to the residents. The presentation was made as part of National Nurses Week, which runs from May 6-12.

Steamtown Marathon Recognizes Lackawanna County Work Release Program

William King, center in back row, Director of the Steamtown Marathon, presented the Lackawanna Prison Board and Work Release Program with a plaque for their ongoing support of the race. Prisoners in work release provide assistance with setting-up and dismantling the finish line equipment and doing general clean-up activities. Lackawanna County has also played a major part in the marathon by offering a variety of maintenance and general services.

Women’s Resource Center’s “Good Works”

The Women’s Resource Center has long been a vital community advocate for providing crisis assistance, transitional housing, economic help, and teen services for females and their families in Lackawanna County. For its commitment to ending domestic and sexual violence, the Lackawanna County Commissioners presented agency representatives with a “Good Works” certificate. The WRC’s major fund raiser, “Great Chef’s Chopped Challenge,” is set for Wednesday, May 1, at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel.

Child Abuse Prevention Month

Staff members from the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) gather with the Lackawanna County Commissioners for a ceremonial proclamation that designated April as “Child Abuse Prevention Month.” The CAC has been the leader in combating child abuse, neglect and exploitation by providing specialized trauma therapy, education, law enforcement assistance and advocacy services. Last year, the Center provided help to over 1,000 youngsters.

“Good Works” By Parents Loving Children Through Autism

Kathleen Walsh, center, Founder of Parents Loving Children Through Autism (PLCTA), accepts a “Good Works” certificate from The Lackawanna County Commissioners for the organization’s commitment to helping families deal with this learning and socialization disorder. PLCTA was founded in 2002 and has over 300 families involved in the program, offering them information on services or other agencies that provide assistance, legislative alerts and news on dealing with the autism spectrum.
