Governmental and Community Affairs

The Lackawanna County Commissioners want to encourage our talented college students and young professionals to remain here at home. Our greatest resource in Northeast Pennsylvania is our people. Commissioners Michael J. Washo and Corey D. O’Brien, through the newly established Department for Governmental and Community Affairs, are investing in community retention by developing student based programming supported and run by a governing body of local business, university and civic leaders. The direction of Lackawanna County’s future depends on how the county competes in the job market across the state and the country. Investing in critical programs, such as community externships, will not only retain these individuals, it will also expand the local job base through the collaboration of government, collegiate, business and student sectors.

Promoting Lackawanna County government to our younger generations can help attract industry through the retention, qualifications and personal connectedness our students share with the community as a whole. Lackawanna County is a great place to work, live and play. Keeping our best and brightest home in Lackawanna County begins with developing relationships and networking these great attributes through the formation of regional job growth. Kevin M. Haggerty serves as the Deputy Director of Governmental and Community Affairs, and also sits on the board of directors of Penn’s Northeast; a non-profit organization designed to facilitate the creation and retention of quality jobs in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Lackawanna County Commissioners encourage diversity in all county programs, and they believe a stronger future comes from the many traditions and backgrounds that make up this great part of the world.
