Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority

For the past fourteen years, the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority (LHVA) has worked to conserve the heritage and to improve the economic vitality of the diverse communities nestled along the Lackawanna River in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The LHVA creates, supports and funds partnerships with government, business, civic and educational organizations and individuals dedicated to the development of the valley’s historic, cultural, natural and economic resources. This strategy of “heritage development” is implemented through coordinated efforts in preservation, education and promotion of regional heritage.

The four-county territory covered by the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority has been designated as both a State Heritage Park and a National Heritage Area. This designation means that the region has been recognized for its unique contribution to the American experience, not only by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, but also by the United States Congress. Additionally, although LHVA is a municipal authority under the sponsorship of Lackawanna County, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the National Park Service provide major funding for all LHVA activities. Other state and federal agencies have participated in grant funding for specific projects.

One of the most important factors in the operation and success of the LHVA is the wide array of partnerships that help strengthen the endeavors and capacities of local communities, organizations, and attractions. Local officials and planners can request partnership with the LHVA for assistance in many areas, including seeking grants, creating events, coordinating volunteer efforts or arranging for technical assistance. In addition to working with its partners, the LHVA has organized a number of its own programs and projects, all created in order to preserve the heritage and improve the quality of life in the Lackawanna Heritage Valley.
