| Applying For Your Marriage License |

| To obtain a marriage license, both applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age and appear in person during office hours. No appointment is necessary. Applicants under the age of eighteen (18) years old are required to have a parent or legal guardian present to sign a consent form. Both applicants MUST present the following requirements to the clerk in order to be issued a license: AS OF JUNE 1997, BLOOD TESTS ARE NOT REQUIRED • Valid Government Issued Photo Identification ( State Drivers License, Passport, Military ID) • Social Security Numbers (Card is not required) • Certified Copy of Final Divorce Decree or Death Certificate (Applies to ALL couples who were previously married) • Acceptable payment for Marriage License Fees The fee for a Marriage license is $55.00 Acceptable forms of payment include cash and personal check. Credit or Debit Cards will NOT be accepted. |

| Applicants who are not citizens of the United States may apply for a marriage license. The following requirements apply •Valid Government Issued Photo Identification( State Drivers License, Passport, Military ID) • Certified Copy of Final Divorce Decree or Death Certificate (Applies to ALL couples who were previously married) • Acceptable payment for Marriage License Fees Important: To ensure accurate applications, Non-English speaking applicants must make arrangements to have a translator present during the application. In addition, all foreign language documents are required to be translated in English prior to application. If you require assistance locating providers of these services, please call the Marriage License Bureau at 570-963-6708 for assistance. THREE (3) DAY WAITING PERIOD Upon completion of the application, couples will be issued their marriage license; However, According to Pennsylvania Law, there is a three (3) day waiting period before the license can be used. All applicants should make arrangements to apply for their license at least (3) days before their wedding date. Special arrangements are available for couples with unique circumstances (Ex: military deployment). A court order waiving the three day waiting period can be requested. The fee for this service is $35.00. *Applicants must contact the marriage license bureau PRIOR to application to make arrangements for this service. Once a marriage license is issued in Lackawanna County, it is valid for sixty (60) days and can be used anywhere in the state of Pennsylvania. After the sixty (60) day period, the license will expire and cannot be “renewed”. Re-Application is necessary in this circumstance.
