Flu Shots & Senior Health Fair

In case you haven’t noticed, there is a crispness in the air, signaling Fall is on its way.

Now is the time, especially if you are 65 or older, to get vaccinated to combat the flu and its sometimes severe complications.

Lackawanna County is once again making it real easy for area residents to do so. The County’s Community Relations, Community Outreach and Communications Departments and its Area Agency on Aging, along with the National Council on Aging and support from Sanofi Pasteur, are conducting a Senior Health Fair and providing free flu shots as part of the “Flu & You Program.”

The event is scheduled for Friday, September 20, from 10 am – 2 pm in The Club Level at PNC Field, Moosic.

The fair, which is being sponsored by Traditional Home Health & Hospice, Delta Medix, Senior Health Care Solutions, Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Allied Services and CareGivers America, will also feature 50 exhibitors, offering information on a variety of programs, services, living arrangements, legal information, sight and hearing data, transportation, and financial advice.

“Human Services are a huge part of our mission. This health fair is a natural for us,” said Lackawanna County Commissioner Jim Wansacz. “The people who attend not only get a flu shot, but they also can learn about programs that they could utilize for themselves, a family member or a friend in the future.”

“This is a very practical program for us to offer,” said Commissioner Corey D. O’Brien. “This is a great example of collaborating with other organizations to help-out our seniors with information on what services they can capitalize on.”

“This program was a huge success last year. It is important to alert the public on how to stay ahead of the “bug.” We also want our seniors to know what services are available to help them out now or in the future,” noted Commissioner Patrick M. O’Malley.

“We have a very large elderly population that we care for everyday,” explained Colin Holmes, Executive Director of the County’s Area Agency on Aging. “The Senior Health Fair is a great for them to get valuable information, a flu shot, and the opportunity to learn something and socialize.”

The event will open with a brief program featuring remarks from the Lackawanna County Commissioners, Pennsylvania Health Department, and representatives from the Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties’ Area Agency on Aging organizations.

After the program, flu shots will be given continuously throughout the day by pharmacists from Rite Aid Pharmacy. Attendees will only need to provide their insurance and Medicare cards and name as a means of matching them and the serum batch that they receive.

Once the guests receive their flu shot, they will be able to visit the vendor displays and take part in the various screenings and other services being provided.

Seminars will also be offered in the luxury suites. Kathy Fox of the County’s Highway Safety Program will discuss “Mature Driving.” Shannon Cooper from Meals On Wheels will offer advice on nutrition. The YMCA will present information on fitness.

Atty. Brenda Colbert, Colbert & Grebas, will talk about Estate Planning. Atty. Nicholas Lutz of Marshall, Parker & Weber, LLC will speak about protecting assets from long-term health care costs.

Snacks, beverages and a light lunch will be served. There will also be various giveaways at the booths and prize drawings.

Rides from the area’s high rises will be provided by the County’s transportation system. Individuals must register at their high rise by Tuesday, September 17, at 2 PM for a ride.

Michele Newberry of the County’s Community Relations staff and Christopher Minora of the Economic Development Department secured the exhibitors for the fair.
