Lackawanna County Commissioners Announce Funding For Fifteen More Community Re-Invest Projects

Fifteen new projects, focusing on such areas as youth recreation, the environment, public safety, veterans, food preparation, and accessibility, were approved for funding by the Lackawanna County Commissioners through their Community Re-Invest Program totaling $188,865.

Since the Community Re-Invest Program was established in July of 2013, the Commissioners have approved grants for 86 projects totaling $1,294,475.  In all of the projects, the Community Re-Invest Program has provided the “last mile” funding to help complete the initiatives, which has allowed these valuable community projects to come to fruition.  The total amount of public-private investment in all of these ventures is $6,029,898.

The funding for these projects once again highlights the Commissioners’ commitment to the growth and enhancement of Lackawanna County’s communities and neighborhoods.  The funding helped to leverage new development in our cities, boroughs, townships and municipalities.

“These projects represent our ongoing commitment to Lackawanna County’s quality of life.  A vital part of our economic development program is to improve our neighborhoods and recreational facilities, which are the core of our community.  These developments represent new progress and growth for our area,” said Commissioner Jim Wansacz.

“Once again, we are giving back.  This round of funding involves opportunities dealing with the environment, youth, accessibility and the projects of civic organizations, all key elements that form the foundation of Lackawanna County,” explained Commissioner Patrick M. O’Malley.

“I am very impressed with the breadth of the projects funded by the Community Re-Invest Program.  It has served as a true partnership with the County, our communities and civic groups,” explained Commissioner Edward G. Staback.

The projects that were approved during this round of funding include:

Applicant: Dunmore Senior Center 

        Project Description: Purchase an additional refrigerator in coordination with its “Healthier Meals” program, which is comprised of more fruits and vegetables and needs additional refrigeration.

        Total Project Cost: $49,950

        Amount from CRP Program: $2,350 

Applicant: Jessup Borough

        Project Description: Upgrade restroom plumbing and do work to bring the Youth Sports Complex into ADA compliance.

        Total Project Cost: $20,108

        Amount from CRP Program: $20,000 

Applicant: Vietnam Memorial Committee (Northeastern Detachment Marine Corps League)

        Project Description: Engrave a blank granite panel on Courthouse Square with the names of Vietnam the service men and women from Lackawanna County who died in the war. A picture panel will also be incorporated into the project.

        Total Project Cost: $4,500

        Amount from CRP Program: $1,500 

Applicant: Throop Borough

Project Description: Installation of safety netting and a new scoreboard at the softball field at the Borough’s Little League Complex.

        Total Project Cost: $30,148

        Amount from CRP Program: $10,000 

Applicant: Eureka Hose Co. (Olyphant)

Project Description: Upgrade the lighting inside the firehouse to improve safety and energy efficiency.

        Total Project Cost: $12,600

        Amount from CRP Program: $6,300 

Applicant: Benton Athletic Association

Project Description: Construct a picnic pavilion and repair damaged restrooms and scoreboard at the Little League field.

        Total Project Cost: $16,000

        Amount from CRP Program: $6,000 

Applicant: Friends of the Poor

Project Description: Construct handicap accessible restrooms and entrance ramp at the agency’s new facility for its “Clothes Line for Men” program. The University of Scranton is allowing the organization to utilize a vacant property on Linden Street.

        Total Project Cost: $272,714

        Amount from CRP Program: $10,000       

Applicant: Lackawanna Wyoming Valley Railroad Historical Society

Project Description: Paint the Moscow Railroad Station and install a handicap accessible ramp.

        Total Project Cost: $9,995

        Amount from CRP Program: $7,995

Applicant: Olyphant Borough

Project Description: Install a new elevator, upgrade the restrooms to meet ADA regulations and construct a new handicap accessible ramp at Borough Building.

        Total Project Cost: $225,000

        Amount from CRP Program: $10,000 

        Applicant: Carbondale YMCA

Project Description: This project involves pool re-grouting & tile patch work and the purchase of two treadmills, 10 touch tablets for the day care center, a carbon monoxide detector, an electronic sport wall and sports equipment.

        Total Project Cost: $40,575

        Amount from CRP Program: $30,000 

        Applicant: Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority

Project Description: Construct pavilions at the Green Ridge trailhead in Scranton at the Nay Aug Avenue play area and at the trail site along the river in Peckville to complete the corporate donation of a community bocce ball court.

        Total Project Cost: $67,880

        Amount from CRP Program: $20,000 

        Applicant: Old Forge Athletic Association

Project Description: Do plumbing work associated with the construction of the new storage facility.

        Total Project Cost: $40,500

        Amount from CRP Program: $5,000

Applicant: Clarks Green Borough

Project Description: Purchase two automatic door openers and a defibrillator.

        Total Project Cost: $5,245

        Amount from CRP Program: $4,720 

        Applicant: Old Forge Lions Little League

       Project Description: The project involves field renovations, sprinkler system installation, dugouts’ repair and general construction.

Total Project Cost: $45,000

Amount from CRP Program: $30,000 

Applicant: Dimes From Heaven Foundation

Project Description: Construction of 30’ x 40’ splash pad at the Fell Township Community Park on site of the former Fell Elementary School.

Total Project Cost: $40,000

Amount from CRP Program: $25,000 

Projects will continue to be reviewed and funded throughout 2015.  Boroughs, municipalities, townships and nonprofit entities are encouraged to submit applications for projects that are ready to start so that the Community Re-Invest Program can help to successfully complete them.
