Lackawanna County Commissioners Cut The Ribbon To Open Moosic’s Main Street Bridge

The Lackawanna County Commissioners Jim Wansacz, Patrick M. O’Malley and Edward G. Staback cut the ribbon on September 10 to officially open the newly constructed Main Street Bridge in Moosic, allowing traffic to flow once again through a vital downvalley artery.

The Commissioners are very pleased to have the bridge, which was a State-funded project, back in service for the residents.

“The bridge has always been a transportation mainstay for the Moosic and Old Forge.  Now that the project is complete, it will provide vital access for residents, EMS personnel and the general public.  It has also improved the aesthetic appearance of the area,” the Commissioners explained.

The bridge, which is being renamed Moosic Veterans Memorial Bridge, had been closed since April of 2011.

The structure was built in 1956 after being wiped-out in a flood.  It was originally a 112 foot long, two span bridge.

Lackawanna County replaced the span with a new 50 foot 6 inch single span steel I-Beam bridge that is 30 feet curb to curb.  The new bridge utilized an existing abutment on the east side and a new abutment on the west side.

All of the utilities were relocated off of the bridge, landscaping was done and a bronze plaque was incorporated to mark the opening of the span and its reconstruction.

The original span was upgraded in the 1970’s through a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection project.  One of the spans was filled with earth and a concrete channel was built through the other span.
