LACKAWANNA COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS MEETING – January 27, 2016 »

The “Good Works” Of My Brother’s Keeper Quilt Group

The Lackawanna County Commissioners presented a “Good Works” certificate to representatives of the “My Brother’s Keeper Quilt Group” for its efforts in providing sleeping bags to homeless people nationwide. Flo Wheatly began this crusade in 1985 when she met a homeless man in New York City and made him a sleeping bag out of her children’s outgrown jeans, shirt and sweaters. Utilizing volunteers and students from Keystone College, the group crafts nearly 100,000 quilted sleeping bags a year, 800 for the Greater Scranton area, to fight hypothermia. The supplies and materials for the bags are donated by local residents.

L-r, Marie Cochrane and Len Wheatley, My Brother’s Keeper Quilt Group; Commissioner Jerry Notarianni, Flo and Jim Wheatley, My Brother’s Keeper Quilt Group; Commissioner Patrick M. O’Malley, Lucas Taylor, My Brother’s Keeper Quilt Group; and Commissioner Laureen A. Cummings.
